Judge Jennifer Kershaw QC told Leeds Crown Court Mark Southeby, 38, was ‘devious’ and ‘resourceful’ after he infiltrated a group of girls at a secondary school in the Leeds area by assuming other children’s identities on sites such as Facebook, MSN and MySpace.

Southeby, of Dutton Way, Iver, Buckinghamshire, earlier pleaded guilty to three counts of inciting sexual activity involving a 15-year-old girl and six offences of harassing teenage girls.

The court heard he developed an online relationship with the 15-year-old girl, telling her repeatedly that he loved her and wanted her to be his girlfriend, and suggested she took part in a series of sex acts.

He obtained the girl’s mobile telephone number and plagued her with calls in the early hours of the morning after she blocked him from contacting her on the MSN site, leaving her feeling ‘frightened’.

Unemployed Southeby also discussed drugging another young girl and had bought chloroform over the internet in the past.

The court heard this other girl was the subject of a ‘concerted campaign’ by the defendant, which included impersonating her father in order to obtain information about her from her school and football club.

Judge Kershaw said the girl was ‘frightened and worried that someone had become obsessed with her’.

Southeby’s mobile phone was found to contain an enormous number of ‘non-indecent’ photographs of teenage girls wearing Ugg boots and the court heard he asked a number of the girls questions about this sort of footwear.

‘The defendant is not only sexually deviant, he is devious, the offending is repeated and it was resourceful.’

Speaking about the effect Southeby’s actions had had on his victims, the judge added: ‘One can imagine the level of distress and upset these events have caused in the families of these young girls.’

Southeby was also sentenced to an extended licence period of eight years, which Judge Kershaw said would enable him to be monitored after his release.
